Professor Rinaldo Wellerson Pereira, Director of Postgraduate Studies in Science, Genomics, and Biotechnology at the Universidade Católica de Brasília and his team of researchers are looking at the effect of exercise on production of exosomes, which are cell-derived microvesicles thought to play a key role in intercellular signaling.
Prof. Pereira, who is also an avid tri-athlete, knows first-hand the benefits of exercise. But now he is interested in extending his personal experience on the road to his work in the lab by elucidating the proposed mechanisms linking exercise with improved health.
Prof. Pereira recently acquired a qNano system to characterize exosome size and compare exosome expression levels between donors who complete various amounts of exercise. Izon’s US Applications Scientist Dr. Anne Sandstrom has been working with the group this past week, her visit culminating in the delivery of Departmental Seminar entitled, “From Exosomes to Cells: Tunable Resistive Pulse Sensors (TRPS) for High Resolution Characterization of Nano to Micro-Scale Vesicles.”
Getúlio Junior, lead student researcher on the project, communicated after the presentation that he is, “really excited to get experiments underway!”
